Inside the Coil-Coating Line: How Prepainted Aluminum Coil Is Actually Made

Prepainted aluminum coil is not simply aluminum with paint on top. Every finished coil leaves a continuous coil-coating line where alloy selection, chemical pretreatment, film thickness and curing temperature are controlled to within microns. For architects, roofing contractors and OEM buyers, understanding that process is the fastest way to tell a 20-year façade from a three-year repaint.

Step 1 — Substrate Selection Sets the Ceiling

The process begins with the alloy. Grades 1050, 1060 and 1100 offer excellent formability at attractive cost, while 3003 and 3004 add manganese for strength and corrosion resistance in roofing and cladding. Grade 5052 is specified for coastal and high-humidity projects. Hangxi Metal supplies prepainted aluminum coil from 0.25 mm to 1.2 mm in thickness and 600–1250 mm in width, with tensile strength from 50 to 260 MPa and elongation of 8%–25% depending on grade and processing. Strip flatness matters: any rolling mark or inclusion is magnified once the paint film is applied.

Step 2 — Degreasing and Chemical Pretreatment

The strip is alkaline-cleaned to strip rolling oil, then given a conversion coating that builds a fine, porous layer anchoring paint to metal. This is the least visible and most under-specified stage in the entire line — and the most common root cause of peeling, blistering and edge creep in service.

Step 3 — Precision Roller Coating

Primer and topcoat are applied to the front face by precision rollers, with a back coat protecting the reverse side. Front coating thickness is normally 10–25 µm and back coating 5–10 µm, adjusted according to coating chemistry. Resin choice governs real service life, not the datasheet gloss number.

Coating System Expected Color Retention Typical Specification
PE (Polyester) 3–5 years Interior panels, signage, economy applications
HDP (High Weather-resistant Polyester) 5–10 years General exterior cladding, roofing
PVDF (Fluorocarbon) 10–20 years Curtain walls, coastal and high-UV projects
FEVE Long-life exterior Premium architectural and industrial coatings

Surface effects are equally configurable: high gloss, matte, metallic texture, imitation wood grain and imitation stone grain, all produced in RAL numbers or matched to customer samples.

Step 4 — Curing Is Where Quality Is Won

The coated strip passes through a multi-zone oven where peak metal temperature must be held inside a narrow window. Undercured film stays soft, blocks on the rewinder and loses adhesion; overcured film turns brittle and cracks along the bend line. Pencil hardness is verified at 1H–3H on the finished product, which is only achievable with correct cure combined with correct film build.

Step 5 — Testing, Slitting and Export Packing

After cooling, each coil is checked for coating thickness, T-bend adhesion, gloss, color difference and mechanical properties against AISI, ASTM, BS, DIN, GB and JIS standards. Protective film is laminated, the coil is slit to final width, and export packing — moisture-proof paper inside, iron sheet outside, fixed with a wooden pallet — protects coil edges through ocean freight.

What Buyers Should Specify

  • Alloy and temper matched to the forming operation, not just the price per ton.
  • Coating system and film thickness (front and back) stated separately.
  • Color standard — RAL number or approved sample, with tolerance agreed up front.
  • Pretreatment and cure controls — ask the mill what it monitors, not only what it prints.

With ISO-certified production, a supply capacity of 15,000 tons per month and a 25-ton minimum order, Hangxi Metal builds those controls into every prepainted aluminum coil shipment, from roof panels and cladding to signage and appliance trim.
